2027 Color of the Year: Which Picks Work on a House Exterior

The 2027 Colors of the Year behave very differently outdoors. As of October 6, 2026 the picks are Sherwin-Williams Celery, Behr Grounded, Valspar Cottage Door, Glidden / PPG Artifact, Dutch Boy Deep Rooted and Dulux Soulful Sage. Here is how each one handles sun, siding and brick, which surfaces it suits, and which trim white and door color from the same brand go with it.

The short answer

For a whole-house body color, the easiest 2027 picks are Sherwin-Williams Celery (LRV 71) and Valspar Cottage Door (LRV 26). Glidden Artifact (LRV 20) works on a body that gets good light, or as a front door. Behr Grounded (about LRV 11) and Dutch Boy Deep Rooted (LRV 17) are strongest on doors, shutters and trim accents: as a full body color they absorb a lot of sun, so check what your siding allows first. Dulux Soulful Sage has no published code yet, so judge it from a physical sample.

Every 2027 pick, judged for outdoor use

LRV is each brand's own value as listed in our paint catalog; Behr's figure for Grounded is a reported one and its HEX is our approximation. The trim column is the white in the same brand that sits closest to the pick's undertone, and the last column is a same-brand partner chosen the same way, from the catalog's color data rather than by eye.

Why LRV matters more outside than inside

Light reflectance value runs from 0 for black to 100 for white. Outdoors it predicts two things at once: how the color will look in strong daylight, and how much of the sun's energy the surface will soak up. Exterior colors nearly always look lighter and less saturated in full sun than on a chip held indoors, so Celery at LRV 71 can read close to pale cream on a south-facing wall, while Cottage Door at 26 keeps its blue.

Low-LRV colors also run hotter. Grounded, at a reported LRV of about 11, reflects only around a tenth of the visible light that hits it, and dark siding in direct sun gets noticeably warmer than light siding. That matters most on vinyl, which can soften and warp: paint makers generally advise against painting vinyl darker than its original color unless the paint is formulated for it, which is why Sherwin-Williams sells a VinylSafe color range. Wood, fiber cement, stucco and brick tolerate deep colors better, although a deep body color will show fading sooner on the sunniest side of the house.

Pick by pick: siding, trim and front door

Sherwin-Williams Celery

Celery's yellow undertone keeps it from turning icy outdoors, which makes it one of the easier pale greens to live with on siding. Sherwin-Williams Alabaster (SW 7008, LRV 82) is a soft white that shares that warmth for the trim, and Green Sprout (SW 7728, LRV 34), a deeper green from the same family, puts the depth on the door or shutters. Celery and Behr's Grounded sit within about five degrees of hue, so Grounded also works as a front door on a Celery house even though it comes from another brand.

Behr Grounded

On a whole house Grounded reads as a dark olive-brown that suits board-and-batten, cedar and stone, and on a door or garage door it hides dirt well. Behr Statement White (DC-002, LRV 83) is the near-neutral white that keeps it from looking muddy, and Behr Foggy London (PPU25-09, LRV 54) is a light body color with the same undertone if you want Grounded only on the door and shutters. Our HEX for Grounded is an approximation, so confirm the pairing with real chips.

Valspar Cottage Door

Cottage Door is the most flexible exterior pick this year: blue-grey enough to sit under a charcoal or black roof, and light enough at LRV 26 to cover a whole house. Valspar Moonbeam (4005-7A, LRV 83) is a cool white that keeps the blue clean on trim. For the door, Cadet Song (8004-38G, LRV 7) is the deepest step on Cottage Door's own Valspar card, so it adds contrast without a new hue. For a warmer accent, Dutch Boy's Deep Rooted sits almost exactly opposite Cottage Door on the color wheel.

Glidden / PPG Artifact

Artifact is a shade deeper and smokier than Cottage Door, at LRV 20, so on a north-facing or heavily shaded facade it can read close to slate. Use it where the house gets good light, or keep it to the door and shutters against a lighter body. PPG Calla Lily (PPG1042-1, LRV 81) is a cool white with the same undertone for the trim, and PPG Sailor's Coat (PPG1153-7, LRV 6) is a deep blue for the front door.

Dutch Boy Deep Rooted

Deep Rooted is a saturated terracotta at LRV 17, and it is at its best on a front door, shutters or a garage door. It sits about 177 degrees from Cottage Door and Artifact on the color wheel, which makes it their natural complement: Dutch Boy High Seas Blue (337-5DB, LRV 21), the closest Dutch Boy color to Artifact, is a body color that lets a Deep Rooted door stand out. Dutch Boy Crisped White (022W, LRV 82) is a warm white for the trim.

Dulux Soulful Sage

Dulux describes Soulful Sage as a soft, silvery green. With no published code or LRV we cannot place it in the table, so look at a Dulux chip on the wall outdoors, in both sun and shade, before you choose a surface for it.

Brick, stone, roofs and wood

The fixed materials on a house matter as much as the paint. A few rules of thumb for this year's picks:

  • Red or orange brick: the blue-greys, Cottage Door and Artifact, sit roughly opposite orange on the color wheel, so they calm busy brick instead of competing with it. Deep Rooted is close to brick's own hue and can disappear against it; keep it for a door on painted, grey or cream masonry.
  • Buff brick, sandstone and warm stone: Celery's yellow undertone matches their warmth, and Grounded works for shutters or a door alongside them.
  • Charcoal, black or slate roofs: the cool blue-greys sit naturally under a dark roof. Brown or weathered shingle roofs suit Celery and Grounded, which share their warmth.
  • Natural wood and cedar: Grounded and Deep Rooted both lean warm and earthy, so they suit porches, beams and wood-clad gables, while Celery keeps a wood-trimmed cottage light.
  • Black windows and gutters: the two blues and Grounded take black frames comfortably; on a Celery house, black frames add contrast that white trim softens.

Exterior Paint Visualizer paints a photo of your actual home with real brand colors. Choose the surfaces to change, from walls and siding to the front door, garage door, shutters, window trim, fascia, soffit and corner boards, search the brand's library by name or code (Celery, 6421, Cottage Door or 8004-38E), and compare the result with your original photo on a before-and-after slider. Save the versions you like and share them before anyone buys a sample.

Behr's Grounded (T27-01) is newer than the app's Behr library, and that library also holds an older color named Grounded (240D-5, a terracotta), so check the code. Until T27-01 arrives, preview a close match such as Sherwin-Williams Hidden Trail (SW 9525). Your first render is free; after that the app uses credits. Whatever you choose, finish with a large sample board viewed on the sunny and the shaded side of the house, morning and evening.

Still to come

As of October 6, 2026, Benjamin Moore (expected October 2026) and Pantone (expected early December 2026) have not announced a 2027 color yet; each pick is added to the table above once it is published.

Common questions

Direct answers before you choose paint

Which 2027 Color of the Year works best on a house exterior?

Of the picks with published codes, Sherwin-Williams Celery (LRV 71) and Valspar Cottage Door (LRV 26) are the easiest whole-house colors. Glidden Artifact suits a well-lit body or a front door, while Behr Grounded and Dutch Boy Deep Rooted are strongest on doors, shutters and trim accents.

What trim color goes with Valspar Cottage Door?

A cool white keeps the blue clean. In the same brand, Valspar Moonbeam (4005-7A, LRV 83) shares Cottage Door's undertone. For a front door, Cadet Song (8004-38G), the deepest color on Cottage Door's own Valspar card, adds contrast without introducing a new hue.

Can I paint vinyl siding a dark 2027 color like Grounded?

Check first. Dark colors absorb more of the sun's heat, and vinyl can warp when it overheats, so paint makers generally advise against going darker than the original vinyl color unless the paint is formulated for it, such as Sherwin-Williams' VinylSafe range. At a reported LRV of about 11, Grounded is safer on a door, shutters or wood siding.
